November Update

OASIS UPDATE NOVEMBER 2016

2016 has been a time of transformation at OASIS. Your generous support has helped OASIS grow in relationship with 115 youth, ages 12 to 24, on a daily basis. From January to August of 2016, OASIS served home-cooked dinners, planned and prepared by our youth, as we opened our doors after school to students Mondays through Thursdays for basketball and a half hour time of creative, personal connection and prayer.

Collaborations continued with agencies devoted to youth developments, such as Fadia, a non-profit outreach connecting to female youth through their middle school and high school years. Youth meet at OASIS every Thursday, when we share a meal together. Three lock-ins for girls were experienced by the Fadia participants at OASIS this year. OASIS continues its relationship with SUMMIT UP, a collaborative of agencies and youth, which held a job and employment event at OASIS in the spring of this year. OASIS youth are a part of the planning team.

OASIS has begun a new relationship with Pastoral Counseling Service (PCS), where 264 students, ages 5 to 19, attended camp at OASIS this past summer. In addition, beginning Fall 2016, PCS clients attend a weekly program at OASIS during the school year and additional times whenever Akron Public Schools are closed for holidays or calamity days. PCS will continue to provide summer camp at OASIS in 2017. This past summer five OASIS youth and two adults attended YouthWorks camp in Chicago. The 31st Street Beach was a highlight for all.

The “Change Agent” internship program helped all six OASIS interns transition into secure housing and permanent employment outside of OASIS at Walmart, local restaurants, and Beachwood Mall. Three additional interns were hired in culinary, marketing, and security positions. Student housing is provided in two rental properties for five students.

Last year the youth that we supported in The Way program definitely gained strength. Thirteen youth graduated high school in June. Fourteen students are attending college in 2016 (Akron, Kent, Youngstown, and Stark State) and four students are enrolled in the military. In April of 2016, OASIS modified its mission statement to: “Provide an incubating environment for youth to gain strength to take steps forward.” Between April and August this year, we began measuring relational and life steps. From April through August 115 youth took 1160 steps!

However, during this same time and including the month of August, OASIS encountered 24 incidents of violence or threats of violence in our building. In October we hired a security guard and reduced our activities to smaller groups of youth who have gained our trust. Activities continue at Sunday morning worship, called Simply Worship and at Friday special events

We have re-named “The Way” to “A Way,” as we began to understand the deeper needs of the Oasis students. We continue to connect with youth we can trust, who are committed to finding strength to take steps forward. We continue to provide excellent outcomes as we measure relational and life steps taken forward. The movement of OASIS has shifted to ensure safety and to re-group back to the activities that we know absolutely help urban youth to gain strength. In addition, OASIS has begun a formalized process to include older youth in our volunteer leader roles.

Yvette S. Thompson on the cover of Cleveland Lifestyle Magazine

Check out our CEO/Founder Yvette S. Thompson on the cover of Cleveland Lifestyle Magazine!! This month is the 4 years celebration of her providing services to the youth in the Akron community. Most of the young ladies that were in the program since 9th grade has recently graduated from High School (Akron Public Schools) this month.

Seeing the growth and accomplishments of the young women is a true blessing. Seeds were planted and most of them took the advice that were given at Fadia Young Women’s Program Inc, now they have blossomed into adulthood. So, please congratulate our CEO for her consistency and passion with the inner city youth.magazine_covermagazine_article

Simeon and Anna

Tags :

Continuing to follow the early life of Jesus we now find ourselves entering the temple for the dedication of Jesus. Here we run into two characters, Simeon and Anna. Simeon had spent his life in preparation of the promise of the deliverance of Israel and Anna, a widow for the majority of her live, lived in the temple praying and waiting for the redemption of Israel. It seems that their entire lives had been lived waiting for this one particular encounter with the Jesus and his parents.

That much focus, that much dedication, all leading to a specific moment. Had Simeon or Anna decided that they deserved a break, or if they were distracted by trying to capture the perfect Instagram photo op. or just simply to tired to pick their heads up off the floor they could have missed it. An entire live’s preparation missed because of distraction.

What are we living to accomplish? How do we prepare for our live’s purpose? What is our live’s purpose? Join us tonight as we take a look at living a life of preparation.

Doors open at 3:30, dinner at 5:15, and the experience to follow.

Direction

Direction.

Maybe you have a strong sense of it, maybe you do not. No matter how strong your sense of direction or purpose; chances are, somewhere a long the line the direction you thought you were headed ended up taking you somewhere quite unexpected. These disruptions in our self-realized grand schemes can either send us spiraling or we can allow them to refocus us.

As we continue to follow the early life of Jesus we find the small family in a bit of danger as Herod’s anger pours over the land of Bethlehem, claiming the lives of every infant in and around the place that Jesus was born. Thanks to Joseph’s willingness to listen and act, Jesus life was spared. However; this small family finds themselves fleeing to Egypt. Egypt, a land that previously their people had been enslaved and brutally mistreated for so many years. A place that was once a symbol of oppression and suffering now acting as a haven of shelter.

Whatever we may have planned for our futures or the directions we foresee our lives headed, twists and turns in the road don’t have to mean failure, but can often be God’s way of keeping us on track for a successful future.

Join us tonight at the usual time the usual times: doors open at 3:30, dinner at 5:15, and the experience to follow.

See you tonight!

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year!

I hope that everyone had a wonderful holiday season!

Tonight we reenter into our Outreach Night Experiences with the arrival of light. Join us as we take a look at the beginning of Jesus’ life and journey toward the start of his ministry. This month we are going to focus on remembering the past and looking toward the future as we revisit some old OASIS classic experiences and follow the early years of Jesus’ life.

In honor of The Force Awakens we may not be playing with light sabers, but there definitely will be saber lights! You will not want to miss the old OASIS style flashlight tag, complete with tunnels and smoke machines.

See you tonight!
